Bacalhôa
Since 1922, the Bacalhôa winery has been producing territorial wines, establishing itself today as one of the largest and most innovative estates in Portugal. Founded as João Pires & Filhos for the sale of bulk wine, over the decades this productive reality has experienced an unstoppable expansion that sees it today distributed across several estates located in the most important Portuguese wine regions, such as Alentejo, Peninsula de Setubal, Bairrada, Beiras, Dão, and Douro. The common motto for each estate, which still retains its own unique identity tied to the place, is “Art, Wine, and Passion”. In 1981, the winery was the first in all of Portugal to vinify a white wine in oak barrels, a testament to its pioneering spirit. With an unparalleled winemaking heritage, Bacalhôa's current objective is clear: to produce quality wines that reflect the specific characteristics of the respective areas from which they come, exporting the image of Portuguese wine culture to the world.
The Bacalhôa winery has of as much as 1200 hectares of owned vineyards, located in various viticultural areas of the Portuguese territory that differ significantly in pedoclimatic characteristics. The cultivated varieties are 40, including local grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Aragonez, Moscatel de Setubal, Alicante Bouschet, Arinto, Casteleão, and Trincadeira, as well as famous international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, and Chardonnay. Given that the attributes of the grapes are quite heterogeneous and the winemaking objective is very variable, these varieties are processed in countless styles, adopting different types of wine containers, from steel tanks to wooden barrels.
With over a century of winemaking tradition, the vast selection of Bacalhôa winery is able to satisfy the needs and tastes of both national and international consumers. The range includes white, rosé, and red still wines, sparkling wines, and fortified wines, all expressions connected to the area of origin.
