BAROLO 'PIRA' ROAGNA 2014 DESCRIPTION

Barolo Pira portrays with crystal clarity the class and austerity of Nebbiolo, in an interpretation of absolute classicism. Pira, an extremely vocated cru for Nebbiolo vines and known for yielding tight, deep wines, as well as a monopoly of the Roagna family since 1989. Luca Roagna is a custodian of the land, and has decided to steadfastly continue the family tradition, which has always included the utmost respect for the vineyard and biodiversity, as well as work in the cellar with a view to little interventionism. 12 hectares planted with vines, located among some of the best subzones of Barolo and Barbaresco, cultivated without any chemicals and continuing in the cellar with spontaneous fermentations, banning clarification or filtration.

Pira red comes from pure Nebbiolo grapes from the cru of the same name located in Castiglione Falletto. This family-owned monopoly covers about 11 hectares and can be subdivided into 6 microplots having different soil composition, ranging from bluish marls to calcareous rocks. The vines used to make up this wine are between 25 and 50 years old, and are harvested manually in October, with double sorting of the grapes first in the vineyard and then in the cellar. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in large wooden barrels and lasts about 10 days while maceration is long and lasts between 60 and 75 days. It ends with maturation in large oak barrels for about 5 years.

Roagna's Barolo Pira drops into the glass with a ruby color veering toward garnet. The first olfaction returns a liquid of extreme typicity, a perfect fusion of class and composure. Purebred Nebbiolo from the Langhe, gradually revealing itself in its notes of licorice, cherry and violet violet, all with a phlegmatic gait typical of the true champions. The tasting reveals the wine in every component, and it is overwhelming and impetuous. It takes possession of the palate, by virtue of an irrepressible freshness and a saline texture that lengthens the sip considerably, fading on a very long persistence. Yet another masterpiece not to be missed, like all the wines from this winery.
