Argiolas' Cannonau 'Costera' is the label that best represents the Sardinian tradition of great reds. It is made from the island's flagship grape, a biotype of the Garnacha or Grenache vine, which is also widely planted in Spain and the south of France, due to its ability to withstand hot, dry and very windy climates. Thanks to the excellent ripeness of the grapes, and well-calibrated ageing, the wine restores the sunny, Mediterranean charm of Sardinia. Its soft character makes it ideal to accompany grilled meat or spit-roasted game.
'Costera' is a Cannonau produced by Argiolas, one of the most representative realities of the Sardinian wine scene. The estate is located near Serdiana, in the hilly hinterland of the Gulf of Cagliari. Established at the beginning of the 20th century, it has handed down from generation to generation the best traditions of the area and produces excellent wines from vines historically present on the island. The wine is made with a majority percentage of Cannonau, supplemented by a balance of Bovale and Carignano. The grapes come from the estate's vineyards, cultivated on calcareous-clayey soils with the presence of pebbles. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 28-30 °C with a maceration period on the skins of a dozen days. The wine then matures for 8 months in cement vats and 9 months in second-passage French oak barriques, in order to avoid excessively pronounced woody notes.
Argiolas' 'Costera' red is a fresh and fragrant Cannonau, made to offer a bottle capable of giving immediate drinking pleasure, simple and convivial. It is a red that brings to the fore the varietal richness of the grapes in the clearest purity. In the glass it has a dark ruby colour with garnet hues. The olfactory picture is intense with aromas of ripe cherry, blueberry, blackcurrant, red plum, hints of delicate spices, myrtle and aromatic herbs of the Mediterranean maquis. Harmonious and enveloping, it has velvety tannins and ripe, juicy fruit that anticipates a soft, fruity finish.
