The historic cooperative winery Sardus Pater presents the Carignano del Sulcis Riserva ‘Is Arenas’, a red wine with a warm and enveloping taste capable of transporting the senses to the wonderful Sardinian island. This winery bases its production on Carignano, a grape variety that has been cultivated in Sulcis since antiquity, a territory located in the southwestern tip of Sardinia. On the island of Sant’Antioco, where the estate is located, Carignano is grown in bush vines on its own roots, and today the over 200 member conferitors continue the work of enhancing this black grape variety. The Sardinian expression “is arenas” means “the sands”, a name chosen to highlight the nature of the soils from which the grapes come.
Sardus Pater Carignano del Sulcis Riserva ‘Is Arenas’ is a 100% Carignano from vines grown on their own roots using the bush vine system on the island of Sant’Antioco. The vines have an average age of 80 years and are rooted in predominantly sandy soils. After the harvest, which usually takes place at the end of September, the bunches are brought to the winery for vinification in stainless steel tanks, containers in which alcoholic fermentation and maceration on the skins take place for about 15 days. Subsequently, the mass is transferred to Allier oak barriques where malolactic fermentation and aging of 10 months occur, followed by an additional 6 months of refinement in the bottle.
‘Is Arenas’ Carignano del Sulcis Riserva Sardus Pater has a brilliant ruby red color. From the glass emerge clear aromas of red fruits, licorice, and Mediterranean scrub, with herbaceous notes and black pepper in the background. Soft, warm, and enveloping is the taste, endowed with a silky texture and pronounced tannins that lead to a fruity and spicy finish.
