Contrada G Passopisciaro 2022

The Contrada G from the Passopisciaro winery is an intense red wine of great elegance produced on the slopes of Mount Etna at an altitude between 800 and 1000 meters. The winery is owned by Andrea Franchetti of the Tuscan estate Tenuta di Trinoro, who was one of the first to pay attention to this area of Sicily with its unique geological conformation and to purchase land on the northern slope of the volcano. The Contrada G from Passopisciaro is produced with pure Nerello Mascalese grapes from century-old vines planted in contrada Guardiola, at the edge of a recent lava flow from 1947 that stopped just before the vineyards.

The high altitude allows for a late harvest, compared to the regional standard, towards the end of October. The grapes are then destemmed and fermented in stainless steel containers for about 15 days, before being transferred to large oak barrels, undergoing malolactic fermentation and aging for about 18 months. Once the aging period is complete, the wine is bottled and after a short maturation period in bottle is put on the market.

The Contrada Guardiola from Passopisciaro is a deep and complex wine that presents itself with a ruby red color with slight violet reflections. On the nose, it is intense, with rich aromas of red fruits, sour cherries, dried flowers, dog rose, violets, herbs, and aromatic spices, finishing with balsamic and mineral notes. On the palate, it has good persistence and the right softness, a balanced red with a slightly tannic finish. This label from Passopisciaro is a red of great harmony that lacks nothing, encapsulating in its craftsmanship all the aromas of a Sicily to be discovered, capable of offering that elegance often difficult to achieve in wines from Southern Italy.
