The Cotes du Rhone “Assieges” by De Boel France is a red wine produced with typical varieties of the Rhône, from a young family that decided to start anew, far from their lands of origin. The winery produces territorial wines, but by philosophy seeks a lower concentration compared to the local tradition, and this wine is no exception. On the nose, black fruits, violet, and hints of Mediterranean scrub are perceived. On the palate, it is broad, intense, and full-bodied, but the sip is juicy and soft, very pleasant to drink.

The Côtes du Rhône “Assieges” by De Boel-France is a wine originating from the Rhône Valley, particularly from the village of Lemps located between Lyon and Avignon. The winery is run by the couple Nelly and Arnaud De Boel, who have shared a passion for the world of food and wine since 2009; after some experiences in French Domaines, in 2016 they decided to start their own business, recovering old grape varieties and plots of land: in 2018 their first vintage was released on the market. The name of the wine means “siege” and recalls the siege of 1870 that the Parisians endured from the Prussians, which forced them to sell and eat exotic animal meats; thus, the wine refers to one of the most unlikely moments in French history.

The Grenache Noir, Syrah, and Carignan grapes of the Côtes du Rhône “Assieges” by De Boel-France grow on soils mainly composed of sandstone, limestone, silt, and sand with some fossil sediment for a final product with a characterful structure. The working philosophy involves minimal intervention from human intervention in the vineyard: the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture are preferred, following the rhythms and natural phases of growth and development of the plants and clusters. Once the manual harvest is completed, traditional methods are followed in the winery, and fermentation is spontaneous thanks to the action of indigenous yeasts in steel. It then ages for a few months in steel.

The Côtes du Rhône “Assieges” by De Boel-France appears in the glass as an intense and dark ruby red. The aromas recall wild blackberries, ripe plum, and violets, accompanied by hints of aromatic herbs; on the palate, it is structured, juicy, and enveloping with a final softness that invites drinking. It pairs excellently with mixed cold cuts, grilled red meat, and game; it is also interesting with aged cheeses. An artisanal wine resulting from passionate work and attention to detail that awakens the genuine flavors of the grape varieties and adapts to cheerful gatherings with old friends to enjoy an authentic wine together.
