Falanghina 'Vigna Astroni' Cantine Astroni 2020
Callmewine's FavouritesThe Falanghina "Vigna Astroni" is a white wine that matures in stainless steel tanks, whose roots sink into the lands rich in volcanic elements of the Gulf of Naples. Its bright straw yellow heralds fresh almond notes, combined with fresh aromas of crunchy white-fleshed fruit, such as pear and apple, floral hints of dandelion, fresh rose, and wisteria. The sip is pleasant and drinkable, with clear mineral notes closely linked to the territory.
“Vigna Astroni” is the Falanghina that Cantine Astroni produces in a unique patch of land, particularly rich in mineral elements, perched on the outer slopes of the Cratere Astroni. It is effectively the concept of the French cru, for which only the result of the fermentation of those grapes is bottled. Since 1892, the Varchetta family has cultivated the slopes of this imploded volcano over 4000 years ago. Vincenzo Varchetta was the founder of this winery, but his entrepreneurial wishes were fully realized by his son Giovanni who, after fighting during the Second World War, managed to fulfill his father's dreams. Today, his knowledge has been passed on to Vincenzo, namesake of his grandfather and third generation of winemakers.
Cantine Astroni produces its Falanghina “Vigna Astroni” on a vineyard of one and a half hectares organized in terraces facing Southeast, and the soils are sandy, of volcanic origin and well-drained. The manual harvest takes place during the first decade of October, when the grapes have absorbed all the summer sun and have become enriched with elements that will make them unique in the glass. These are lightly pressed and left to macerate for a couple of hours. The fermentation is started by selected indigenous yeasts, that is, isolated from previous batches, and takes place in stainless steel tanks. Once this phase is completed, the wine is racked and left to age on fine lees for 6 months.
The Falanghina from Cantine Astroni carries with it all the qualities of “Vigna Astroni”, perfectly managing to combine the strong mineral component inherited from the unique subsoil characteristics of the Gulf of Naples, with the softer notes of the varietal. From a deep straw yellow, the clear floral aromas are immediately distinct and enveloping, with wisteria and jasmine clearly recognizable. Then the iron notes of flint strike intensely, leaving a small space for hints of white-fleshed fruit. The tasting is made particularly pleasant by the saltiness and warmth, while always maintaining a great pleasantness that makes it a label of great drinkability.
