Callmewine's FavouritesThe Faro Le Casematte is a rich and complex wine, with a very Mediterranean aromatic profile, aged in large barrels for 24 months. A deep bouquet reveals vegetal, spicy and peppery notes, with hints of red fruit. On the palate, it reveals great freshness and sapidity, good tannins and a long mineral persistence.
The Faro Le Casematte is one of the most interesting reds in the current Sicilian wine scene. A blend of native grape varieties from Eastern Sicily, aged in French oak, that conquers with its balance and harmony. The extreme tip of northeastern Sicily, which extends towards Calabria, separated from the mainland only by the strait of Messina, is a land of ancient traditions in viticulture, dating back to the remote times of the first Hellenic colonization in the 8th century BC. A very long history that in recent decades, dynamic and enterprising wineries like Le Casematte have renewed and brought back to the attention of enthusiasts with quality and character labels.
Le Casematte Faro is produced in a small estate overlooking the strait, named after the presence of three fortifications, dating back to the First and Second World Wars, built to defend the strategic channel between Sicily and the mainland. The wine is born from a blend of 4 historicallypresent in the area: Nerello Mascalese 55%; Nerello Cappuccio 25%; Nocera 10% and Nero d’Avola 10%, trained on trellises with yields not exceeding 50 quintals per hectare. The harvest is manual and usually takes place around the third week of September. After red winemaking with skin maceration, it matures for at least 9 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux and concludes the aging with an additional 6 months in the bottle.
The Faro is a red with a sunny and Mediterranean profile, which conquers with its aromatic intensity and the complex harmony of its bouquet. The perfect balance of the four grapes that compose it derives from the oldest traditions of the territory. Thus the fortunate blend of typical Etna grape varieties is born, with Nero d’Avola and the ancient native grape variety Nocera. The wine presents an intense and brilliant ruby red color. The olfactory profile is characterized by floral scents, aromas of small berries, spicy notes, oaky hints, and nuances of Mediterranean scrub herbs. On the palate it isdeep, with good structure, rich fruit, dense, fine tannic texture, and good freshness. The finish is long and persistent, with a pleasant savory closure.
