The “Duca Enrico” is the flagship wine of the famous Sicilian winery Duca di Salaparuta. It is a pure version of Nero d’Avola with great elegance and intensity, which well represents the best expressive qualities of this great indigenous Sicilian grape variety. The aging for 18 months in barrique allows the wine to evolve and enrich itself with refined tertiary notes, making the bouquet particularly complex, deep, and persistent. It is a prestigious label, to be tasted among connoisseurs during a special evening, with roasted or grilled red meats.
The wine “Duca Enrico” originates in the central-southern part of Sicily, specifically in the lands of the Tenuta Suor Marchesa di Butera, in the hilly inland area of Resi and Gela. It is one of the numerous properties of the Duca di Salaparuta winery that cultivates vineyards in various areas of the Island, chosen among the most vocated ones. The Nero d’Avola vines are located at an altitude between 200 and 300 meters above sea level and are trained as bush vines on soils of calcareous-siliceous matrix. The dry and hot climate of the area is mitigated by sea breezes, which create an ideal climate for the perfect ripening of the grapes. The wine is produced with a strict selection of the best bunches. The grapes are destemmed and started to ferment at a temperature of 28-30 °C, with skin maceration of 8-10 days. The wine matures for 18 months in French oak barriques before being bottled and completes the aging with another 18 months in the cellar.
The “Duca Enrico” is one of the symbolic wines of the renaissance of Sicilian enology. First produced in 1984, it quickly established itself as a reference label for all enthusiasts and is still recognized today as one of the best versions of Nero d’Avola. The wine presents a ruby red color with garnet reflections. On the nose, it releases elegant and complex aromas, with floral notes, cherry aromas, and small dark berry fruits, spicy hints, sensations of underbrush, nuances of dark chocolate, carob, leather, and tobacco. The sip is enveloping and deep, with soft tannins, a harmonious and very persistent finish.
