The Verdeca from Salento ‘Askos’ produced by Masseria Li Veli is an expression that enchants with its aromas of ripe fruit and flowers, typical traits of the Verdeca grape. This ancient indigenous variety has been cultivated for centuries in the Apulian territory, particularly in the Valle d’Itria, where it has only recently been rediscovered and enhanced. In addition to the undeniable qualities of the wines it produces, Verdeca is also appreciated for its high resistance to diseases and its adaptability to different pedoclimatic contexts, factors that have contributed to the appreciation that the grape has received in recent decades. Masseria Li Veli has also contributed to its enhancement, having decided to vinify the Verdeca in purity with this ‘Askos’ selection label starting from the 2009 harvest.
The Salento Verdeca Masseria Li Veli ‘Askos’ originates from only Verdeca grapes from vines over 20 years old grown on sandy soils characterized by calcareous residues. Following the harvest, carried out in early September, the bunches are immediately transferred to the winery for the traditional white winemaking, based on a soft pressing followed by the alcoholic fermentation of the must in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, particularly between 11 and 25 °C. The maturation phase of a few months, which precedes the final bottling, also takes place in steel.
The Verdeca from Salento Masseria Li Veli ‘Askos’ has an intense straw yellow color with golden and greenish reflections. The nose presents characteristic notes of ripe yellow fruit and pineapple, followed by distinct saline hints and alluring floral notes of helichrysum and chamomile. On the palate, it surprises with its marked freshness, able to balance the full body and enveloping softness of the wine, anticipating the pleasant savory and fruity finish.
