Torre Mora represents theambitious Etnean project of the Piccini family, one of the most important Italian wine families in terms of numbers. In particular, the Piccini family chose to invest in a small estate located in Rovittello, a hamlet in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia on the northern slope of Mount Etna. Here in 2016, Mario Piccini, the fourth generation of the family involved in the wine business, decided to embark on a new project after falling in love with the estate, ambitiously dedicating himself to the renovation of the vineyards and cellar.
The Torre Mora estate comprises 15 hectares of vines spread over two vineyards, located respectively in Contrada Dafara Galluzzo, in the territory of Rovittello, and Contrada Alboretto Chiuse del Signore, in the municipality of Linguaglossa. The vines are between 10 and 15 years old and rest on volcanic soils that are shallow and very rich in mineral elements. In addition, the vines benefit from the high altitude, between 600 and 700 metres above sea level, and the considerable temperature swings between day and night that accompany the ripening of the grapes. On these unique environmental and pedoclimatic parameters, Torre Mora cultivates the indigenous varieties Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante and, above all, Nerello Mascalese, vines bred using the Etnean bush and spurred cordon systems, adopting agronomic practices that respect the dictates of organic farming, certified in 2018. Generally, once the grapes have been harvested, they undergo a short cold pre-fermentation maceration to enhance the aromatic heritage of the grapes. Stainless steel tanks are then used for fermentation, so as to ensure a controlled fermentation process, while the subsequent maturation periods take place in wooden barrels or again in steel, depending on the label under consideration.
Through the wines of Torre Mora, the Piccini family intends to recount its oenological vision of Europe's largest active volcano, emphasising the strong mineral stamp that is a distinctive feature of the wines produced here. Thanks to the Piccini family's work, Torre Mora wines are now present in the major wine markets around the world.
