Guided with passion and dedication by the Botter family, La Caneva is an artisan winery in the Veneto region that offers its own interpretation of the Piave wine-growing area, embracing a production philosophy founded on values such as authenticity and genuineness. The winery, based in the municipality of Ceggia in the province of Venice since 1980, was founded in 1973 by Giancarlo Botter, who in the same year planted the first vineyards in the Cessalto area. With a diploma from the Scuola Enologica di Conegliano Veneto (Oenological School of Conegliano Veneto), Giancarlo, then only 23 years old, inaugurated the first vinifications as early as 1974. Today at the helm of the estate he is joined by his son Tommaso, also a wine technician, who graduated in 2007. Throughout its winemaking history, the Botter family has always maintained a focus on environmental sustainability and craftsmanship in the production process, thus producing wines with character.
The Botter family of the Veneto estate La Caneva breeds a combination of traditional varieties, such as Verduzzo Trevigiano, Raboso Veronese, Tai and Glera, and international varieties, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines stand on fertile soils rich in clay and mineral elements, also benefiting from the area's peculiar microclimate, squeezed between the Venetian Pre-Alps and the Adriatic Sea. The agronomic conduction adopted by Giancarlo and Tommaso Botter excludes the use of herbicides, pesticides and chemical fertilisers, envisaging only the use of copper and sulphur in plant protection. Vinification is based on spontaneous fermentation and long maceration on the skins even for the white grapes, in stainless steel tanks or terracotta amphorae. Invasive clarification and filtration operations are banned throughout the production cycle.
The La Caneva wine cellar is the protagonist of a varied artisanal production that reflects the heterogeneity of the area of origin, with sparkling wines, white wines, red wines, orange wines and re-fermented wines in the bottle endowed with a sincere character.
