Arribas Wine Company

Arribas Wine Company was founded in 2017 in Bemposta, a small village in the municipality of Mogadouro, in the northeast of Portugal. The choice of this location was not accidental: the region boasts a rich winemaking heritage, characterized by ancient vineyards and unique edaphoclimatic conditions. The winery took its first steps in a small garage, which had been used for years as a private cellar, before permanently settling in the historic part of the village. Its position on the mother rock ensures cool and constant temperatures, favoring optimal winemaking. Positioned within the national and regional wine scene, Arribas Wine Company stands out for its traditional yet innovative approach, drawing inspiration from both the Portuguese denomination of Trás-os-Montes and the nearby Spanish DO Arribes, with which it shares many pedoclimatic and varietal characteristics.

The work in the vineyard and the winery is based on principles of sustainability and respect for the land. Cultivation takes place in old vineyards, ranging from 70 to 100 years old, where both red and white grape varieties coexist harmoniously. The main red varieties include Tinta Gorda, Bastardo, Serrana, and Verdelho Vermelho, while the most notable white varieties are Verdelho, Malvasia, Posto Branco, and Bastardo Branco. The soils, primarily of igneous origin with granite and granodiorite, are poor and challenging to work, located on cliffs overlooking the Douro River. The climate is characterized by long, harsh winters and scorching summers during the day, with cool nights. Harvesting is done by hand, with grapes transported in small crates to preserve their integrity. In the winery, the production philosophy follows a minimalist approach, with open fermentation vats, a vertical press, and aging in oak barrels, avoiding any invasive interventions to achieve pure and authentic wines.

Beyond winemaking, Arribas Wine Company is distinguished by cultural and social initiatives aimed at enhancing the region. One example is PROJECT BELFO, created to support local associations committed to preserving cultural and environmental heritage. Each edition of the project features a custom label with a QR code that provides information on how to support the selected association. One of the winery's most emblematic labels is Saroto, the first wine produced, whose name comes from a local term referring to an animal with a severed tail. The lizard symbol, known for its regenerative ability, represents the winery’s commitment to recovering and preserving a unique winemaking heritage. Arribas Wine Company's wines stand out for their lightness and drinkability, fully expressing the character of the land and the native grape varieties that define its identity.
