Alfio Mozzi
The winery of Alfio Mozzi is a small reality in Valtellina, producing wines of great territorial typicity. Alfio's work is inspired by a sincere passion and love for his land and is carried out with an authentic artisanal spirit. Originally from Castione Andevenno, a small village in the province of Sondrio, located at 470 meters above sea level, he has lived in a landscape context where viticulture has been present for centuries since he was a child. However, his personal and professional history led him to take care of the vineyard only after working as a blacksmith for about ten years. In 1998, Alfio decided to leave the workshop and the tools of the trade to fully dedicate himself to the land, and with a true vigneron spirit, he began to take care of the family vineyards.
His estate is located in the heart of Valtellina, which, together with Franciacorta and Oltrepò Pavese, represents one of the best excellences of viticulture in Lombardy. Despite the alpine latitude, the area presents geographical and climatic conditions that make it very suitable for grape cultivation. Unlike most alpine valleys, which cut through the mountainous territory from north to south, descending towards the flat areas, Valtellina has an unusual west-east orientation. This peculiarity allows the northern slope of the valley to be perfectly exposed to the south, with optimal brightness and sunlight, essential for good grape ripening.
The climate is characterized by significant temperature fluctuations between warm daytime temperatures and cold nights. Ventilation is ensured both by the mild breezes from Lake Como that ascend the valley and by the cool winds descending from the alpine peaks. The soils are poor and stony, very suitable for viticulture based on low natural yields. The vineyards are cultivated on terraces supported by dry stone walls, which require labor-intensive and non-mechanizable manual cultivation. In this extraordinary context, Alfio Mozzi began his adventure by merging some plots into the core of the family vineyards and progressively enlarging his estate. Among the rows, he cultivates Nebbiolo, known in this area as Chiavennasca, the grape variety that has best adapted to this cool and sunny alpine habitat. The work in the winery is carried out very simply, with the aim of creating honest wines that can tell the terroir.
