Avide
The Sicilian winery Avide boasts a long history of winemaking, which began in 1882 in the province of Ragusa with Francesco De Stefano, who that year purchased the first vineyard. Following Francesco's initial acquisition, in 1930 he acquired the property in Mortilla, equipped with the largest wine press with three troughs and a capacity of about 600 hectoliters, and then in 1971 the property in Acate, Litteri, consisting of 21 hectares. The winery is located in the municipality of Comiso, situated in the production area of Cerasuolo di Vittoria, the first and still the only DOCG on the island. Here, in 1979 the new winery was inaugurated and in 1982 the first wines were marketed, officially marking the beginning of the new course of the estate. The purchase of a farmhouse with 18 hectares in the Bastonaca area dates back to 1990. Today, Marco Calcaterra and his wife Lidia manage the estate, also dedicating themselves to the production of evo oil.

Based on these environmental parameters, following the principles of organic farming, certified since 2014, the Calcaterra family primarily cultivates the traditional varieties Nero d’Avola, Frappato, Grillo, and Insolia, along with the international grape Syrah, which has shown exceptional adaptation to the Sicilian territory. The decision to embrace organic farming is set within a high regard for the health of the environment and biodiversity, further enhanced by the use of photovoltaic panels and solar thermal energy. To enhance the expression of each wine, both stainless steel tanks and wooden barrels are used as containers for vinification and subsequent aging.The production of the Avide winery includes expressive wines endowed with a identity linked to the region and in particular to the Cerasuolo di Vittoria area.
