The winery Barberani has its headquarters in Orvieto, but the estate, which covers an area of about 100 hectares, 55 of which are vineyards, located on the green hills surrounding the lake Corby. 1951 is the official year of foundation of the company, which was established by Vittorio Barberani. In those years, the production was limited all'Orvieto Classico, a superb blend of Trebbiano and Grechetto Procanico. In the 70 Luigi and Giovanna Barberani take the run of the estate to pass the baton to his sons Bernard and Nicholas, who currently run the business. The soils of the vineyards are quite diversified and combine characteristics of volcanic origins, and sedimentary limestone and clay and enjoy all the great exposure around noon and a very favorable climate with a 'significant temperature difference between day and night. Some vineyards Orvieto Classico are frequently shrouded in thick fog in autumn, and therefore find fertile ground the "Botrytis cinerea", the noble rot that, by absorbing the liquid the berry, allows the production of the famous Muffato "Calcaia". In the vineyards of grapes are grown both "international", such as Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon, both local varieties such as Grechetto, Trebbiano Procanico, namely the Trebbiano, Muscat and Sangiovese. Already Luigi Barberani 80s had started viticulture and all the activity of the company towards a sustainable and organic production, with the burial of the shoots, the use of the classic green manure and fertilizer absolutely organic in nature. This line is still closely followed by his sons. The new winery is located in the middle of vineyards and is equipped with all the latest equipment for the production of wine; in this cellar, under the expert guidance of oenologist Maurizio Castelli, assisted by Nicholas Barberani, all operations are carried out according to the dictates of the organic, avoiding to the maximum the use of chemicals. A special note to the aforementioned Muffato "Calcaia", Grechetto and Trebbiano Procanico, a wonderful sweet wine, gift of "Botrytis cinerea" and the wise man's work, which was awarded as "Slow Wine" from the Slow Wine Guide 2014.
