Benoît Lahaye
The name of Benoît Lahaye is among the leading biodynamic vignerons in Champagne, renowned for the genuine and identity-driven style of his sparkling wines. Located in the Bouzy region, within the Montagne de Reims area, this is the homeland of the best Pinot Noir in all of Champagne. Benoît Lahaye, a Récoltant Manipulant, began his adventure in the Champagne world in 1993 after taking over the family vineyards and gradually converting to organic farming and then biodynamics. A descendant of a winemaking family active since 1930, Benoît is supported by his wife Valérie and their children in a family business focused on one goal: producing the highest quality while respecting the health of the environment and the identity of the land.
Benoît Lahaye's vineyard spans just 5 hectares, mainly located between the Grand Cru villages of Bouzy and Ambonnay, with about 90% of the vineyards dedicated to Pinot Noir, and the remainder to Chardonnay. The vines have an average age of 40 years, and in 2003, the producer obtained organic certification, followed by biodynamic certification in 2010. For soil cultivation, Benoît relies on his beloved horse Tamise, which helps stir the soil without compacting it. In the cellar, old barrels and oak casks, as well as terracotta amphorae, are used, while fermentation is strictly carried out with indigenous yeasts, including full malolactic fermentation. Often, the vigneron does not add sulfur to his wines, and after a long period of aging on the lees, the sparkling wines are either not dosed at all or have very low dosage, thus preserving the identity of the terroir to the fullest.
The Champagnes crafted by Benoît Lahaye are known for their rich, refined, and vibrant style, with a quality that places the vigneron among the Olympians of Champagne, a reference point for small producers in the Montagne de Reims. These Champagnes are especially appreciated by purists, who will find all the mineral essence of the Montagne de Reims in their glass.
