Blažič
The Blažič winery is a small family reality that has been cultivating vineyards and producing wine in Goriška Brda for several generations, right on the border between Slovenia and Italy. The estate was founded in 1890 as a classic farm, which at the time produced fruit, vegetables, and had some vineyards. Today, the property is managed by Borut Blažič, who has transformed the company by focusing production on quality viticulture, aimed at offering high-quality artisanal wines. Always faithful to the oldest traditions of a territory suited for vine cultivation and particularly for white grape varieties, Blažič has maintained a place of absolute importance for Rebula or Ribolla Gialla, followed by Sauvignonasse - a Bordeaux-origin grape variety, which in Italy was first called Tokai and is now known as Friulano - Malvasia, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. As for red grape varieties, it only cultivates a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon.
It constitutes the Slovenian continuation of the Collio Goriziano. The climate is particularly favorable, temperate, and always very windy. The Prealps chain protects the area from disturbances coming from the north and northeast, and the proximity of the sea allows gentle breezes to caress the vineyards, mitigating temperatures. The soils are of ancient marine origin and consist of sedimentations of sandstones and marls. They are stony and crumbly soils, very draining and rich in minerals. The vines are forced to go deep in search of sustenance and thanks to a very developed root system, they can withstand any periods of drought well, without suffering from water stress. The vineyards cover a total of 9 hectares, located near Plešivo, Medana, Biljana, and have an average age of about 50 years.
The vinifications are simple and are carried out with the sole aim of highlighting the varietal characteristics and the terroir. The production is divided into three different lines. The Fresh Wines are vinified and aged only in steel and are the simplest, fruitiest, and most fragrant expression of the grapes. The Mature Wines are produced with a selection of grapes from the oldest vineyards, aged in oak barrels, and bottled without filtration. Finally, the diamonds of the winery are offered in the Selection line. High-end labels made in a limited number of bottles and only in the best vintages.
