The Bunnahabhain distillery in Scotland specialises in the production of whisky in the Islands, where it produces fine, unpeated single malts. Located in Bunnahabhain Bay, on the shores of the narrow Islay Sound, this distillery is the most remote on the island of Islay. Founded back in 1881, Bunnahabhain made maritime trade its core business, partly because of its remote location. A crisis due to the wars and Prohibition in the United States forced the distillery into a brief closure in the 1930s, while in the 1960s a road was built that made access to the facility via land possible. During this period, the fame of its whiskies soared along with demand, leading to the installation of a second pair of stills in 1963 to increase production volumes. 1979 marked the debut of the Single Malt Scotch Whisky 12 Years, which was an immediate success. In 1993 the maritime trade was definitively abandoned in favour of the land trade, which was considered safer and more reliable, while since 2006 the distillery has belonged to the Burn Stewart Distillers company, which has invested in the brand with a series of renovations and improvements culminating in the following years with the merger between Burn Stewart Distillers and Distell. The term 'bunnahabhain' comes from the Scottish Gaelic language and means 'mouth of the river'.
Bunnahabhain makes single malt Scotch Whisky that is not cold filtered and without colour correction. American or French oak casks previously used for maturing bourbon or sherry are used for ageing, thus enriching the whisky with distinctive aromas.
Bunnahabhain whiskies are rich and complex spirits that express the unique character of the island of Islay. The production is divided into several selections, such as the 'Core Range', comprising mostly whiskies matured in casks previously used for sherry, or the 'Distillery Exclusives' range, made up of a selection of fine products. The 'Limited Editions' and 'Travel Retail' lines complete the offer.
