Cascina Borgatta
Cascina Borgatta is a dream that begins in a distant time and has its roots in the culture of the visceral bond between the cycle of the earth, with its rhythms and times, and human life. Emilio Oliveri and his wife Maria Luisa Barizzone have managed to dedicate their entire existence to the love for the vineyards, inherited from her father at the dawn of the 1980s. It was, in fact, Italo Bruzzone who founded the business during the Second World War, and when he passed away, neither the daughter nor the son-in-law felt the need to abandon or sell the lands that had given so much to the family. This sentimental attachment is immediately reflected in a total respect for the fertility of the soil and, in unsuspected times, in the protection of viticultural traditions. Thus, this winery in Alto Monferrato today boasts organic certification, with unique and easily identifiable labels.
The reds of Cascina Borgatta grow nestled on the 4 hectares entirely owned by the family and are made from Dolcetto grapes.and Barbera. It is the small municipality of Tagliolo Monferrato that welcomes these indigenous grape varieties, with its sandy-loam soils that are well suited to developing particularly long-lived and structured labels. The two owners, now in their seventies, work with youthful tenacity and phenomenal pride, applying what for the new generations is a form of rebellion against the system, but for the two protagonists of this story is nothing but normality. Thus, the grapes are harvested by hand and, after destemming, are left to undergo a spontaneous fermentation by indigenous yeasts, inside insulating concrete tanks. The aging phase takes place in barriques and no clarification or filtration is carried out.
The Barbera "La Borgatta" and the Dolcetto "La Milla" are perfect expressions of the land on which Cascina Borgatta stands, in their full and soft fruity notes and the spices imparted by aging. They remain, however, wines of great honesty, cleanliness, without an ostentatious austerity, that well represent thereds of the generation of Emilio and Maria Luisa. Particularly honest and sincere labels, which do not intend to convey grand messages, but which in reality tell a black-and-white past under a light veil of dust. And immediately it feels like coming home.
