Castellari
There are small realities that arise from the realization of a dream nurtured for many years. This is the case of the Castellani estate, a small winery located on the beautiful island of Giglio, in the heart of the Tuscan archipelago. The idea of creating a farm to start producing wine on the island was realized only after a long period of searching for the most suitable place. In 2002, a journey began to discover the Island of Giglio to find the most suitable location for growing vines. After about ten years of research, in August 2012, a suitable plot of land was finally identified, which would become the original core of the new estate.
The island of Giglio is a small rock with stunning landscapes that plunge into the sea. The culture of the vine has very ancient origins in the Tuscan archipelago, despite the cultivation on the steep rocky slopes of Giglio being very difficult and laborious. The vineyards, in fact, have been created by making narrow terraces supported by dry stone walls. The lands are rocky and sandy, generated by the disintegration of schists and granites. The climate is warm and dry, always very windy due to the presence of constant sea breezes. In this particular pedoclimatic situation, the white grape variety Ansonica has found the ideal environment, widespread throughout the Tuscan archipelago, along the Etruscan coast and in Sicily known as Inzolia.
The estate has panoramic vineyards in three different locations on the island: Castellari, Saetta, and Vernaccio. All vineyard work is done manually, from winter pruning to thinning, up to harvesting, with selection of the best bunches. The production follows ancestral methods, based on minimal human intervention throughout the wine-making process. The grapes are, in fact, vinified with long macerations on the skins, according to the oldest methods, which date back to the Caucasian practices of the origins of viticulture. This is a splendid version of Ansonica that expresses with absolute transparency the best characteristics of the grape variety and its solar and mineral richness.
