Castello di Perno
Castello di Perno represents a historic name in the Langhe and particularly in the lands of Barolo. It is located in a hamlet of Monforte d'Alba, within one of the most famous crus of the area. The historic manor, which still characterizes the profile of the village of the same name, was built during the Middle Ages by the Falletti family. Initially intended to serve a military function to defend the lands, it was transformed into a residence during the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 1970s, it became part of the properties of the Giulio Einaudi Publishing House, which used it as a company headquarters and residence for its authors. In 2012, it was purchased by Gregorio Gitti with the intent to restore both the Castello di Perno building and to bring new splendor to the vineyards of the historic estate.
The Perno cru is located in the northeastern area of the municipal territory of Monforte d'Aba, nestled between Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba, in one of the most renowned and suited areas of the Langhe. The soils are predominantly composed of calcareous clay marls, with the presence of sands, which well express the transitional character from the Bussia cru towards the power and structure typical of Serralunga. The vineyards are cultivated in beautiful hilly areas, with sunny and always well-ventilated exposures. The mild climate allows Nebbiolo to mature perfectly and produce grapes with particularly rich and intense aromas, perfect for producing a great Barolo.
Once the harvest operations are completed, the best grapes, carefully selected in the vineyard, are sent for vinification in stainless steel tanks with long macerations on the skins to favor sweet and delicate extractions of polyphenols and tannins, essential for the longevity of the wines. Following the oldest traditions of the area, without any easy concessions to modernist trends, the Nebbiolo ages in large oak barrels from France and Slavonia of ten and twenty hectoliters, while for Barolo, large Austrian oak barrels of 50 hectoliters are used. The wines have a classic profile and return the traditional taste of the great Barolo, expressing with elegance and finesse the unique characteristics of the Monforte d'Alba terroir.
