Castello di Sonnino
Castello di Sonnino creates its small works of enological art in the heart of Tuscany, in Montespertoli, in what is the smallest DOCG of Chianti. Instead, the labels that the noble Sonnino family has cared for for more than two hundred years are great, perfectly blending the spirit of research with territorial tradition. The profound knowledge of the land and maximum professionalism represent two fundamental values for Baron Alessandro De Renzis Sonnino, who, constantly focused on excellence goals, since 1987 has accompanied international grape varieties alongside Sangiovese and Cannaiolo in his vineyards, creating some of the modern blends that represent a fortunate novelty for Tuscany.
The lands of the Castello di Sonnino winery, where the classic grape varieties for producing Chianti alongside Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Petit Verdot are rooted, are mainly composed of clay and gravel and manage to perform the dual function of water retention and drainage, thus keeping the grapes at an optimal level of humidity. The grapes are harvested mainly during the first week of October, except for Malbec, picked during the second half of September, and Cabernet Sauvignon, at the end of October. The aging periods can vary both in timing and type, ranging from the shorter maturations carried out in concrete to those, more frequently adopted, with 18-24 months in barrique of French oak. This will characterize the great depth of some labels rather than the freshness of others.
The wines of Castello di Sonnino stand out for their numerous facets that dance between the soft and fruity freshness of the “Leone Rosso” to the spicy and soft austerity of the Chianti Riserva, which is aged for a long time in barrels, from the elegantly complex personality of the “Cantinino” to the licorice and underbrush that can be felt in the “San Leone.” The international blends harmoniously marry thanks to the profound love for the land and the philosophy of the great Chateaux that the Baron aspires to in order to make his bottles exceptional, with wonderfully successful results and labels of deep territoriality and innovation.
