Castello di Volpaia

Castello di Volpaia is located in the heart of Chianti Classico and stands out within the municipality of Radda because it hosts the highest vineyards in the entire denomination. The gentle Tuscan hills, covered with lush woods, surround and isolate the small and wonderful village of Volpaia, which for centuries has distinguished itself for the production of oils and wines. Giovanna Stiani, known as Giovannella, the owner of this Tuscan reality, knows this well, as with her dynamic and active spirit, she brings to life wines of excellent quality every year. The estate takes its name from the Volpaia family, who in the Renaissance produced ancient precision metal devices, such as clocks, compasses, and armillary spheres. A production accuracy that continues today with wine production. The production process has not changed either; in fact, the family continues to use the old deconsecrated churches, the small palaces, and the ancient houses for winemaking, aging, bottling, and selling to the public; all connected by a sort of “wine pipeline” (thus is defined by the cellar) underground.

The Castello di Volpaia cellar is also a sought-after tourist destination because it offers a beautiful and ancient estate with various rooms that immerse visitors in the tranquility of nature, among olive groves and vineyards. However, the main attraction is the ancient wine cellar carved into the earth, which is reached by traversing narrow tunnels and old corridors, and retains the charm of history from the past. The vineyards, cultivated according to a biological philosophy, extend over a vineyard area of 46 hectares at altitudes between 350 and 600 meters. Inside, Sangiovese grapes are primarily cultivated, accompanied by international varieties such as Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet. Fermentation occurs using native yeasts in steel tanks in the ancient palace, while aging takes place in oak barrels and barriques in the Church of San Lorenzo, the Commenda, and the Via Castellana cellar.

is certainly the flagship of the production, but the other reds and whites also deserve a taste.
