Caven
Caven is one of the most renowned and historic wineries of the wonderful land of Valtellina. In 1982, brothers Stefano and Simone Nera, after gaining experience in the family estate, decided to found this reality in the locality of Caven, a place of great historical and cultural value, once home to the Camuni people. The rock engravings of this ancient civilization are among the greatest testimonies of the past that have survived to this day, and right among the terraces of the estate, an “archaeological trail” has been created where it is possible to admire all the ancient vestiges. In short, a dive into the past to rediscover a civilization and an ancient tradition; the same that also lives on in the vineyards, which for centuries have taken refuge in the terraces that run along the slopes of the first Retic Alps. A viticulture that requires hard and laborious work, all done by hand, consecrating it as a virtuous example of “heroic viticulture.” The vines, located up to 650 meters in altitude, stretch towards the sky wrapped in a cold and harsh climate, typical of the alpine environment of upper Lombardy.
The vineyards of the Caven winery are organized into 30 hectares, divided into the subzones of Valtellina Superiore: Inferno (as much as 13 hectares of the total 55 of the denomination), Sassella, Grumello, and Valgella. The undisputed protagonist is clearly the Nebbiolo grape, or rather the “Chiavennasca,” as it is locally called by the Valligiani. Alongside this, there are also small quantities of local grapes such as Pingola and Rossola and other more well-known varieties like Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Incrocio Manzoni. The motto of the winery is “wine is born in the vineyard,” so care and attention to the plant are very important for the winery, to the point that Stefano Nera organizes pruning courses to best prepare the staff. In the winery, refinements in oak barrels of different durations are used.
The wines of Caven are the mirror of the Valley, express the purity of the mountain air and the freshness of the Alps. The Sforzato or Sfursat, born from the drying of the grapes, is among the qualitative peaks of the winery. Extraordinary red expressions also accompany it, such as Valtellina Superiore Sassella and Inferno, and many others. All to be tried to truly understand the quality and beauty of Valtellina!
