Château Phélan Ségur
Château Phélan Ségur is a prestigious Bordeaux estate that boasts a wine-making tradition of over two centuries in the Saint-Estèphe area, on the left bank of the Bordeaux wine region. Over this long time, the ownership of the Château has passed through four different families, all capable of successfully nurturing the wine activity of the estate while keeping up with the times and respecting the territory. The Château was founded by the Irish wine merchant Bernard O’Phelan, who in 1805 acquired Clos de Garramey and five years later took over the Ségur de Cabanac estate, naming it Château Ségur de Garramey. The structure was built in Palladian style in contrast to the architectural norms of the time, designing the winemaking and aging environment at the center rather than creating a prestigious residence detached from the wine activity. At the beginning of the 20th century, the cellar took onthe current name of Château Phélan Ségur and today Philippe Van de Vyvere is at the helm of the estate.
Château Phélan Ségur consists of as many as 70 hectares of vineyards, dedicated for more than 50% to Cabernet Sauvignon, the flagship variety of the Saint-Estèphe territory, followed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The rows, rooted in soils rich in clay and gravel with sandy veins, are strongly influenced by the temperate maritime climate of the Médoc and the proximity to the Gironde estuary. The agronomic management adopted by the estate aims for reasoned agriculture, aimed at reducing environmental impact. For the crucial aging phase of the wines, oak barriques are used, about half of which are new, carefully selected based on the origin of the wood, drying time, and degree of toasting.
