Château des Rontets
Château des Rontets is located in the Mâconnais region, in the southern part of Burgundy, particularly near Fuissé, an area known for producing extraordinary white wines made from Chardonnay. The origins of the estate are ancient, dating back to 1819. Since then, the property has always remained within the same family, and in 1995 Claire Varambon, along with her husband Fabio Montrasi, decided to breathe new life into the domaine by focusing on the restructuring of the vineyards, with the aim of producing wines that can express a highly suitable terroir. Today, the estate has just over seven hectares of vineyards divided into various parcels, each characterized by specific pedoclimatic conditions.
The area is marked by the presence of the rocky hills of Solutré and Vergisson, which at 500 meters altitude, outline the profile of a vineyard landscape, occupying a slope situated at an altitude between 200 and 300 meters above sea level, with exposure facing southeast and east. The soils are made up of very similar limestone benches to those found in Côte d’Or.similar to those found in Côte d’Or. The estate has a Clos of 5.6 hectares in the lieu-dit Les Rontets, a half-hectare plot in the lieu-dit Pierrefolle, and one hectare of vines in the lieu-dit Côte de Besset, in the municipality of Saint-Amour. Since 2005, all vineyards have been managed according to the principles of certified organic farming by Ecocert, with the utmost respect for the environment and biodiversity.
The abandonment of chemical substances in the countryside was a choice motivated by the desire to allow the plants to find a better natural balance and to rely on healthy soil. Today, treatments are carried out only using copper, sulfur, and herbal preparations. The territory has regained its vitality, and each plot expresses itself with greater character, highlighting its particularities. All new vines or the replacement of failures come from a mass selection of the best plants from the estate. The planting density is about 8/10,000 vines per hectare, in order to encourage strong competition in the vineyard and a production with low yields. The vinifications are simple. Fermentations occur spontaneously only with indigenous yeasts, and the wines naturally undergo malolactic fermentation. For the fermentation phase, as well as for the subsequent aging, French oak barrels of various sizes are used, depending on the cuvées and the characteristics of the vintage.
