Château Montrose
Château Montrose is located in Saint-Estèphe, in the northern part of the Médoc region. It is a historic estate in Bordeaux, which has been producing great wines for over two centuries. In 1815, Etienne Théodore Dumoulin realized that some family-owned lands have an extraordinary vocation for viticulture. He began to plant the first vineyards and to build the first core of the cellar. In 1855, the domaine was classified as Grand Cru, confirming the great value achieved by the wines of Château Montrose. The history of the estate has continued over the following decades always under the sign of excellence. After going through the difficult period of the two world wars, Château Montrose became part of the heritage of the Charmolüe family, which since 1960 has begun to renew the facilities and modernize the cellar equipment, positioning the domaine among the best Grands Crus Classés of the Médoc.
The property extends over 95 hectares, located in the municipality of Saint-Estèphe, a few kilometers to north of Pauillac. The domaine consists of a single plot, which is located around the historic Château. A peculiarity that allows for easy monitoring of the vineyards and facilitates the harvest operations. The territory is composed of alluvial terraces overlooking the Gironde estuary. The soils are draining, consisting of a surface layer of pebbles and sands, which rests on a substrate of clays, capable of providing a natural water reserve during periods of drought. The climate is influenced by the presence of the large estuary and the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean, which tend to mitigate temperatures, avoiding the danger of spring frosts and the excessive heat of summer.
Thanks to these favorable conditions, Château Montrose can count on exceptional quality grapes, which reach perfect ripeness every year. According to the traditions of the Médoc area, the vineyard is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. Each grape variety is cultivated in the most suitable place to enhance its qualities, with the extremely high density of 9,000 vines per hectare. The presence of different grapes, with different and complementary characteristics, allows for the production of harmonious and complex wines. Each parcel is vinified separately, so as to have a wide range of wines available at the time of blending. The aging takes place in French oak barrels.
