In 2004 Ciro Picariello and his partner Rita Guerriero decided to launch their winemaking adventure in Summonte, just a stone's throw from Avellino. Today Ciro, who has become an acclaimed winemaker in Irpinia, has a vineyard of about 15 hectares, located in the two small villages of Summonte, which is still the headquarters of the winery, and Montefredane. The first one, precisely located towards the Angevin Tower (also shown on the bottle's labels), has a unique territorial conformation with a soil of volcanic origin, composed of rocks and clays; the vines, moreover, stand at an altitude of about 650 metres, benefiting from the cooler climate of the area. The second village is populated by vines located about 500 metres above sea level on soil that is exclusively clayey. Different areas, different climatic conditions and different terroirs give birth to unique and original wines. What the two estates have in common, however, is Ciro Picariello's obsessive care for his greenery and his vines, which aims to concentrate aromas and flavours, favouring maximum aeration and highlighting of the grapes. Insecticides, herbicides and pesticides are therefore banned in the vineyard, and a partial grassing over is carried out so that nature can express itself spontaneously.
The Ciro Picariello winery grows the most typical grapes of the area: Fiano, first and foremost, followed by Greco, Falanghina and other red varieties such as Piedirosso, Aglianico and Sciascianoso. Clearly, Fiano di Avellino is the producer's most cherished vine, grown on both plots and used to give light to his famous and unmissable whites, which are particularly appreciated by critics and magazines in the industry. In the cellar, steel tanks are used, both for the vinification phases and for the final ageing of the wine.
Ciro Picariello wines are great interpreters of the denomination, possessing a typically territorial character and the fruit of a sustainable, artisanal approach. With their rocky minerality, sharp freshness and energetic tone full of personality, the Fiano di Avellino wines of the Ciro Picariello winery represent the most authentic reflection of Irpinia.
