Clos de Luz

Clos de Luz is a prestigious Chilean estate that produces a range of excellent wines. It is a historic artisanal reality, founded back in 1892 and managed for five generations by the Edwards Cosmelli family. The winery deliberately produces a limited number of bottles to safeguard the quality of the wines, particularly the Carménère, an ancient French grape variety, often previously confused with Cabernet Franc, which has found a second home in Chile, becoming the symbolic red of the country. Thanks to the favorable local pedoclimatic conditions, Carménère offers wines of excellent quality, intense, rich, elegant, and complex, which also have good aging potential.

The estate is located in the northern area of Chile. The Valle de Almahue is situated 150 kilometers south of Santiago, 65 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, and 45 from the high mountains of the Andes. It is one of the most suitable areas in the country, south of the famous Cachapoal and Rapel Valleys and north of those of Colchagua and Curicó. The vineyards cover a total area of 33 hectares. The climate is mild and temperate, very sunny, and always breezy. It benefits from a double influence, oceanic and continental, characterized by breezes that rise from the Pacific coast and cold air currents that descend from the peaks of the Andes.

The estate boasts a vineyard park of extraordinary value. The majority of the vineyards were planted in 1945. The Valle de Almahue, in fact, is one of the oldest wine regions in Chile, already cultivated at the time of the colonization by the Spanish Conquistadores. It is also the true cradle of Carménère. All the vines are the result of a mass selection made by choosing the best old plants, using the ancient method of propagation by cutting, that is, burying a long shoot and cutting it from the mother plant when it has developed its roots. No new vine is grafted or planted using clones from nurseries, in order to maintain the natural genetic biodiversity of the original vineyard and its identity, which then translates into wines with a unique personality.
