Controvento

The Controvento winery, represented by the figure of winemaker Vincenzo di Meo, is a small Abruzzese production reality “naturally counter-current that offers authentic and spontaneous wines, made in total respect of the ecosystem. Everything starts in the province of Chieti, within the municipality of Rocca San Giovanni, a beautiful town of just over 2,000 inhabitants that is part of the Club of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. The environmental context is that of the pleasant Fosso delle Farfalle nature reserve, whose name derives from the abundant presence of ditches and natural caves that during World War II provided shelter to partisans and displaced persons.

Here, Vincenzo di Meo cultivates approximately 6 hectares of certified organic vineyards, benefiting from the constant presence of sea breezes coming from the nearby Adriatic Sea and the predominantly calcareous-clay soil. The entire processing process is carried out respecting the soil-plant system as well as the expression of the finished wine, with targeted interventions and never invasive. Pursuing this productive logic, biodynamic preparations are used in the fields and any synthetic chemical product is rejected, while in the winery, work is done without any addition or correction, also excluding the addition of sulfur. By local tradition, the most cultivated grape varieties are Montepulciano and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, alongside which are also Fiano, Passerina, Malvasia, and Cabernet Sauvignon. All fermentations take place spontaneously and the masses are neither clarified nor filtered, in order not to distort the purest characteristics of the wines.

The curious names and the nice designs that describe the various labels mostly evoke the sea: ‘Moby Dick’, ‘Altomare’, and ‘Limite Acque Sicure’ are some examples. Whether white, red, or refermented in the bottle, Controvento's interpretations always have a genuine and convivial character capable of bringing joy to the table.
