Cosimo Maria Masini

The Cosimo Maria Masini winery is a Tuscan estate located near San Miniato, in the province of Pisa. The ancient residence Villa Selva has a long and glorious history, having once belonged to the Buonaparte family and later to Marquis Cosimo Ridolfi, who developed viticulture in these lands. It is currently owned by the Masini family. Maria Paoletti Masini, a lawyer and art enthusiast, decided to manage the estate in full respect of nature, according to the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture. To follow this project, the company collaborates with Francesco De Filippis, an agronomist and expert in sustainable agriculture. The vineyards are located in a hilly area, famous since Roman times for the cultivation of vine and olive, and also known for hosting the route of the famous Via Francigena, the road that led pilgrims from Canterbury to Rome.

Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera, Canaiolo, Sanforte and Colombana, Trebbiano and Malvasia Bianca, along with some international varieties like Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which have acclimatized very well in this area. The estate covers an area of 40 hectares, in a single plot, of which 15 are dedicated to viticulture and the remaining are allocated to olive groves and arable land. The climate is mild and breezy, influenced by the breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The soils are predominantly clayey, quite deep, which retain water well, allowing the vine to withstand even dry periods.

The deep knowledge of an still unspoiled territory has immediately directed the agronomic management towards the principles of biodynamics, to maintain fertile soils and to produce genuine high-quality grapes. All chemical substances have been eliminated, and only copper, sulfur, horn shavings, and horn silica are used for treatments.
