Damned Mountain

Damned Mountain is a New Zealand wine company that produces typical and pleasant Sauvignon Blanc in the Marlborough area. The name of the winery literally translates to "damned mountain" and pays homage to the cru "Les Monts Damnés", one of the most famous and prestigious parcels in all of Sancerre, a region in the Loire that is considered the homeland of Sauvignon Blanc. This production reality stems from a joint venture between a famous British importer of artisanal wines and a winery in Marlborough, with the label illustrations entrusted to artists from around the world.

The vineyards of Damned Mountain winery are located in the Southern Valleys subzone of the Marlborough wine region, rooted in soils made up of clayey loess and "greywacke rock", known as grovacca in Italian, a clastic sedimentary rock composed of an aggregate of debris of various sizes. Furthermore, the plants benefit from the cool and dry climate that contributes to the health of the grapes and the production of fresh and fragrant wines. In this pedoclimatic context, the vineyards are managed organically, respecting the ecosystem. Once ripe, the grapes are hand-picked, and most of the bunches undergo a gentle pressing followed by spontaneous alcoholic fermentation at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks. A small portion of the bunches is instead vinified whole in used French oak barriques.

Damned Mountain winery produces a pure Sauvignon Blanc whose grapes are processed partly in steel and partly in used barriques, according to the illustrated procedure. The result is a white wine with a fresh and mineral character, characterized by hints of exotic fruit and citrus, as well as pleasant herbal notes.
