Domaine des Maravilhas
Domaine des Maravilhas is a French estate that owns vineyards in various areas of the southern Rhône Valley: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Lirac, Laudun, and Côtes du Rhône, all managed under biodynamic farming practices, in order to offer healthy and genuine wines. The Domaine was created in 2014 by Jean-Frédéric and Morgane Bistagne, two great wine enthusiasts who decided to venture into the world of production, taking over an ancient family estate cultivated for more generations, with origins dating back to the 17th century. Always cultivated with the utmost respect for a still wild and unspoiled natural context, dominated by the presence of a lush Mediterranean scrub, the estate has been a pioneer of environmentally friendly viticulture and obtained organic certification as far back as 1992 and biodynamic certification in 2004.
The property is located in the area between Saint-Laurent des Arbres and Saint-Victor la Coste and extends over 24 hectares, of which 18 are dedicated to viticulture. In 2015, three parcels were also acquired in the prestigious area of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The vines are located on the ancient alluvial terraces of the Rhône, composed of galets roulés, which rest on a substrate of sands and clays. It is a unique terroir, appearing as an endless expanse of pebbles. It is a very draining and poor soil but capable of retaining deep reserves of water, essential for overcoming the summer drought periods. The pebbles also retain the heat of the sun and release it at night to the plants, promoting excellent ripening of the grapes.
The vineyards have been planted with a north-south orientation, so they can benefit from exposure to the Mistral, which constantly blows from the north and helps keep the clusters cool, dry, and healthy. The climate is typically Mediterranean, warm and dry, mitigated by sea breezes that rise from the coast inland. The estate is managed with great care, and the lands have never been treated with herbicides, fertilizers, or other chemicals. The presence of forests isolates and protects the vines from any possible external drift and promotes a rich biodiversity. The nature of the soils forces the plants to dig deep in search of water and nutrients, making the vines stronger and more resilient. Thanks to the ideal climate, treatments with copper, sulfur, decoctions, and herbal teas are kept to a minimum. In the cellar, very simple and respectful vinifications are carried out to obtain honest and genuine wines.
