Elephant Gin Distillery
Elephant Gin Distillery is an atypical and original reality in the world of Spirits. It is, in fact, a project born from the desire of Tessa and Robin Gerlach to combine their great passion for Gin with their love for Africa and elephants. The inspiration came from the couple's numerous travels through the vast spaces of the endless savanna of Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa. Upon returning from these adventurous and engaging experiences, Tessa and Robin decided to do something concrete to help preserve the unspoiled nature of these territories and, above all, to protect and safeguard the African elephant, whose survival is seriously threatened by the progressive destruction of their habitat and the threat of illegal poaching by poachers in search of ivory.
From their environmental commitment came the idea to create something that could help Africa and the elephants, even from faraway Europe. Tessa and Robin thus decided to establish a craft distillery that would not only produce excellent Gin, but that could also provide help to protect the wildlife of Africa through fundraising. Every bottle that leaves the distillery represents a contribution to the project. In fact, 15% of the profits from Gin sales is allocated to the safeguarding of African elephants, particularly to the Big Life Foundation and the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. To date, over 1 million euros have been donated to support this important initiative, which has managed to combine two passions and, above all, contribute to an entrepreneurial activity with a strong environmentalist face of great ethical value.
Environmental sensitivity is not only the goal but involves all business choices. The entire production cycle is inspired by the model of a circular economy, with waste reduction and recycling practices. The bottles are made of glass, sealed with a cork stopper, and are completely plastic-free. In the purest artisanal style, the labels are handwritten. The Gin could only be inspired by the scents, aromas, and atmospheres of Africa. The choice was made made by favoring the botanicals that come from South Africa. The blend is based on 14 natural ingredients: orange peel, lavender, apple, buchu, allspice, elderflower, cassia, baobab, ginger, devil's claw, mountain pine needles, lion's tail, African wormwood, and juniper berries. The production of Gin takes place in small batches, using a traditional Arnold Holstein copper still.
