The Pepe winery was established at the end of the 19th century, when Emidio Pepe, grandfather of the current owner, found the hills of Torano the ideal habitat for Abruzzo's two main grape varieties: Trebbiano and Montepulciano. Already in 1944, his son Giuseppe had made himself known throughout the area for the quality of his bulk wine. Twenty years later, it was his nephew Emidio's turn to inherit the land and the knowledge to elevate Trebbiano and Montepulciano to the test of the bottle, so much so that the Torano Nuovo winery was described by the great Mario Soldati.

The 15 hectares owned by Emidio Pepe are located in a breathtaking landscape, with the sea just a few kilometres away and the Gran Sasso mountain behind, with clay and limestone soils and a ventilated microclimate with good temperature excursions. No invasive products are used, no selected yeasts are used to trigger the alcoholic fermentation and no enzymes are added to favour the genesis of the aromas. In both the vineyard and the cellar, only natural products such as copper crystals, mine sulphur and biodynamic preparations are used. This is the philosophy that the Pepe family applies step by step in the process that leads to the production of its wine, which is always vinified in cement with ageing without the use of wooden barrels in the cellar.

Emidio Pepe is a great family winery that over the years has been able to maintain an absolutely impeccable production quality, managing in every vintage to represent the terroir and charm of Abruzzo in each of its artisanal wines because, as Emidio often repeats, 'the home of wine is the bottle'.
