Etnella
Etnella is a young winery that, as the name itself evokes, is located at the foot of the great Sicilian volcano. Founded by Davide Bentivegna in 2008, the winery skillfully interprets the uniqueness of the Etna territory, thanks to a traditional viticulture that enhances biodiversity.
The vineyards extend over 5 hectares, distributed on the northeast slope of the volcano in the contrada Presa, Linguaglossa, Passopisciaro, and Randazzo. Each plot differs in lava stratification, exposure, and altitude, which varies from 600 to 1000 meters above sea level. The cultivated varieties are mainly indigenous, such as Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante, Catarratto, and are trained using the ancient alberello system. Some vines are pre-phylloxera and can even reach 150 years of age. Thanks to the high density per hectare, which drives the roots very deep, and the maximum level of sunlight, the clusters reach an excellent level of ripeness and high quality. Davide takes care of his own land with great love and careful artisanal care: pesticides are completely banned and human intervention is kept to a minimum, with only the aid of copper and sulfur (about 2-3 treatments per year). Additionally, the vineyards are grassed to encourage habitats for insects and other animal species. Around the vines, you can also see olive trees and fruit trees, which enrich the territory and help maintain a natural balance. In the winery, Davide focuses on the most natural vinifications possible, in order to highlight the particular mineral character of the wines: the fermentations are completely spontaneous thanks to the exclusive use of indigenous yeasts, the wines undergo neither clarifications nor filtrations, and the addition of sulfites is minimal or none.
The Etnella winery produces lively and vibrant wines that tell the magic and complexity of the Etna territory with every sip, faithfully returning its different nuances: from each contrada, a different wine is born, which is processed separately, enhancing thus the relative terroir. The Etnella wines express with their elegance and structure a unique place, characterized at the same time by the austerity of the mountain and the sapidity of the sea, presenting a Sicily that you do not expect.
