Famiglia Statella

On the volcanic slopes of Etna, within the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, lies the winemaking reality of the Famiglia Statella, founded in 2016 by the will of Calogera Statella and his wife Rita to produce wine that authentically reflects the unique characteristics of the Etna territory, the birthplace of the couple. The first vineyard was purchased in Contrada Pettinociarelle, on the northern slope of the volcano, followed by the purchase of an old plot in Contrada Pignatuni, in the municipality of Randazzo.

The vineyards cultivated by Famiglia Statella are all located on the northern slope of Mount Etna, where only the native varieties Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio are grown among the red grapes, and Carricante and Catarratto for the white grape varieties. The vines, some of which are centuries old, are rooted in volcanic soils rich in mineral elements, situated at an altitude of up to 765 meters above sea level. The principles of organic farming are applied in the field while in the winery, the fermentations take place in stainless steel tanks, controlled at temperature for the Etna Rosato and Etna Bianco, wines that mature in the same type of wine containers.stainless steel, controlled temperature for the Etna Rosato and Etna Bianco, wines that mature in the same type of wine containers. The reds are vinified traditionally, with 10-15 days of maceration on the skins accompanied by manual punchdowns. The subsequent aging phase takes place in tonneau or French oak barriques, new, second, and third passage.

Famiglia Statella produces four labels: an Etna Bianco from a vineyard located in the municipality of Randazzo, an Etna Rosato from a small portion of the Pettinociarelle vineyard, and two Etna Rosso from the contrade Pignatuni and Pettinociarelle. In particular, the Etna Rosso Contrada ‘Pignatuni’ Vecchie Vigne represents the maximum expression of the Etna territory for the estate. This bottle comes from very old vines, some pre-phylloxera, trained to alberello on volcanic sandy soils rich in skeleton, the basis of the extraordinary mineral verve of the wine.
