Marra Francesco
The winery Francesco Marra is located in the area of lower Salento leccese, near the small town of Ugento. We are in the warm and Mediterranean land of southern Puglia, almost at the tip of the heel of the boot where the two seas, the Ionian and the Adriatic, meet. The winery extends over an area of 70 hectares, of which 22 are exclusively dedicated to vines and the remaining part is used for the cultivation of vegetables, cereals, legumes, and especially olive groves (as many as 42 hectares with even centuries-old trees!). Olive oil and wine are, in fact, considered the productive protagonists of the winery, thus making it a true agricultural reality at 360 degrees. Founded in 2003, it decided from the beginning to adopt an organic approach aimed at safeguarding the vitality of the territory and the spontaneous cycle of nature.
Francesco Marra cultivates two typical native red grape varieties that symbolize these lands: Negroamaro and Primitivo. The vines, from which these grapes sprout, are rooted in the typical dry red soils of the region, which have a strong iron component (which indeed determines the reddish coloration), clay, and potassium, with low presence of organic matter. The climate is hot and dry, especially during the summer season, refreshed by the light sea breezes that rise from the Ionian Sea, about 10 km away. The presence of a burning and intense sun allows the clusters to ripen slowly and accumulate substance and sugars, at the expense of water. The grapes are hand-selected and harvested in small crates. In the winery, they are destemmed, and the must is spontaneously fermented in oak vats of 15 hl for about 10-15 days, with punch downs performed by hand with olive wood sticks. The aging lasts for about a year, and at the end, the wine is bottled without the addition of sulfites.
The Marra wines breathe all the Mediterranean essence and solar warmth of Puglia. They are dense, flavorful, intense, and rich in marine nuances, further emphasizing the connection with the crystal-clear sea. The line includes only single-varietal reds that are "naked and raw," because obtained simply from nature.
