Hirtzberger Franz

The Weingut Franz Hirtzberger is a historic Austrian winery located in the heart of Wachau, one of the most renowned wine regions in Austria, which has become a UNESCO World Heritage site. The estate is precisely located in the village of Spitz and has always been managed by the Hirtzberger family, now in its fifth generation. For decades, this family has played a leading role in enhancing the typical wines of the area, particularly from Riesling and Gruner Veltliner, so much so that Franz, the current owner along with his children Franz and Irmgard, has served for over 20 years as president of the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus association, committed to improving the quality of local productions and their marketing worldwide.

The prestigious wines of Wachau would not be so renowned and prestigious without the contribution of Franz Hirtzberger, recognized as a landmark of the territory. His authority rests on a very deep knowledge of the micro-terroirs of Wachau and every vineyard of property is studied in terms of climate, soil, and exposure. The goal is to express in a pure and faithful manner the different characteristics of Wachau and the vintage. The family vineyards extend for a total of 20 hectares divided into micro-parcels on terraces that slope down towards the Danube River.

The production approach of the Franz Hirtzberger winery is based on the experience of 5 generations. The harvests are scalar, meaning with multiple passes along the rows, and are carried out manually. All fermentations are complete and take place in steel with indigenous yeasts, while for aging, large traditional oak barrels are used. The production is at levels of excellence, and the labels produced are recognized as among the best expressions of the renowned Austrian region of Wachau.
