In a production dominated by large economic groups, Glenfarclas still remains a family-run distillery, in the hands of the Grant family from six generations: founded as a small rural distillery by Robert Hay and legalized in 1836, Glenfarclas passed into the hands of John Grant in 1865 when he paid only 511 pounds.

Glenfarclas distillery is situated in the Scottish region of Speyside, in Ballindalloch, in open countryside at the foot of Ben Rinnes. The meaning of its name is "valley of green grass."

Glenfarclas produces traditional Highland Single Malt characterized by strong hints of sherry. Despite its "rural"character, the distillery owns the largest stills of Speyside, with a production capacity of 3,000,000 liters per year. Currently, only four of the six stills are used, with two reserved in case of necessity. In his warehouse, it contains roughly 50,000 barrels, with stock split in vintages from 1952!

The distillery uses always a particularly pure and soft water that comes from the spring melting of snow peaks of Ben Rinnes, flowing between the granite rocks, perfect for a high quality whisky. The features that distinguish the production, in addition to special care in each phase, are in the careful selection of barley, but especially in the double distillation with direct fire, an ancient method still used by very few distilleries. The production is aged in barrels of Oloroso / Fino Seville sherry. In 2006 Glenfarclas was awarded “Distillery of the Year” by Whisky Magazine: proof that you can be big in the world of whisky although remaining independent.
