Grace Wine

Grace Wine is a Japanese winery located in the Yamanashi prefecture. It has gained recognition for its excellent level of production, especially since 2014, when its white wine Koshu di Grace received much acclaim internationally. It was founded in 1923 by Chotaro Misawa, in the town of Katsunuma. The third generation of the family, represented by Kazuo Misawa, launched the Grace Wine brand in 1957. Through its pioneering activities, it has contributed to the growth of Japanese viticulture, and in 1987 the Katsunuma Wineries Club was created, bringing together 12 young producers from the area. The subsequent period saw a continuous qualitative growth of Japanese wine, and Grace Wine has established itself as a true jewel of the Rising Sun.

The project of Grace Wine was born with the aim of demonstrating that, even in the field of wine, Japan could compete with the most important countries in the world. First of all, the best areas were chosen, capable of ensuring excellent sunny exposures, a mild, breezy climate and significant temperature variations. The right attention has been given to the soils, selecting those most suited and well-draining, ideal for providing the vine with a good habitat. The property is divided into several estates, located in a historic region where the first vines were planted, starting from the second half of the nineteenth century. The area is surrounded by high peaks, such as Mount Fuji and the Chichibu mountains. The vineyards are located in the hilly areas of Toriihira and Hishiyama and produce clusters with ripe and intense aromas.

The Hishiyama district is situated at an altitude between 500 and 600 meters above sea level and is the highest area of Katsunuma. The very cool climate, the presence of rocky granite soils, gravel, and clay, are perfect for the cultivation of white grape varieties. The small area of the Toriihira district, on the other hand, is located at the foot of Mount Kashio, at about 450 meters altitude. The cool winds and gravelly soils allow for the production of grapes of excellent quality. Within the estate, the harvests are carried out manually, with the selection of the clusters made directly in the vineyard. The winemaking processes are conducted with meticulous care, in full respect of the quality of the raw material.
