Greywacke
Greywacke is a winery that is located in the Marlborough region, in the northeast area of the South Island of New Zealand. It is a reality that was founded in 2009 and is managed by the Judd family with great passion and love for their land. It has gained attention thanks to a production of wines of excellent quality level, which are now exported all over the world. The vineyards are located in the Omaka Valley and are cultivated on very suitable soils, with the presence of alluvial stones, resting on a rather deep rocky substrate. The climate is particularly favorable for viticulture and especially for the cultivation of white grape varieties. The sunny exposures, the cool and always very breezy climate, favor slow ripening with an accumulation of rich aromatic components,
The estate is located within an environmental context that is still unspoiled and little exploited by man. It has therefore been natural and spontaneous to immediately embrace the principles of sustainable viticulture and today a good part of the vineyards are conducted according to the principles of the organic farming protocol, without the use of herbicides, fertilizers, or chemicals. Downy mildew and powdery mildew are fought only using small quantities of sulfur and copper. To try to improve the quality of the grapes, particular attention is reserved for vineyard management throughout the year, starting with rigorous pruning, which leaves few buds per plant, in order to work with low yields. During the season, defoliation is carried out or not depending on the climatic trend, with the sole objective of bringing in the harvest healthy, aromatically intense grapes that have retained remarkable freshness.
Each single grape variety and each parcel are carefully followed to obtain varietal typicity and the direct expression of the character of the terroir. Due to the particular pedoclimatic conditions, the Marlborough area has always been very suitable for the cultivation of the main international white grape varieties, particularly Sauvignon Blanc, followed by Chardonnay, Riesling, and Pinot Grigio, as far as the red grape varieties, Pinot Noir is cultivated, which notoriously prefers cooler climates. In the winery, very simple winemaking procedures are adopted, which involve minimal enological intervention during the process of transforming grapes into wine. Fermentations are started spontaneously, using only indigenous yeasts.
