Grifalco della Lucania
The Grifalco Winery was founded in 2004 in Venosa, when Cecilia and Fabrizio Piccin, already wine producers in Montepulciano, decided to move to Basilicata to cultivate Aglianico in the extraordinary territory of Vulture. Today the winery is managed by their sons Lorenzo, who takes care of agronomy and winemaking, and Andrea, who handles the commercial side. The area is located in the northern part of the region, bordering Campania and Puglia, and is dominated by the majestic presence of Monte Vulture, an ancient volcano that reaches an altitude of 1326 meters above sea level. The last major eruption dates back about 140,000 years and created the current caldera and the two small lakes of Monticchio. From the summit of Vulture, the land slopes down into a vast area of high and medium hills, particularly suitable for viticulture.
The soils are of volcanic nature with clay and alluvial deposits, rich in essential mineral elements for the proper sustenance of the vine. As is common in all volcanic territories, the soils vary greatly from area to area, depending on the composition of each individual sciara and the sedimentation over time of magmatic deposits dating back to various eras. The presence of streams, rivers, and springs makes the subsoil rich in water, preventing water stress phenomena. The good altitudes and distance from the sea create a continental climate, with cold winters, hot summers, and significant temperature excursions even during the grape maturation period. The Grifalco winery has decided from the beginning to exclusively dedicate itself to the cultivation of Aglianico del Vulture, with vineyards scattered in various locations of the territory: Maschito, Venosa, Rapolla, and Ginestra.
The estate covers a total area of 16 hectares and is managed under organic farming practices, using only sulfur and copper. Each vineyard is managed individually based on the particular local microclimate, and the harvests and winemaking also occur parcel by parcel. A company choice aimed at valuing each area, which then translates into a range of labels dedicated to the individual terroirs of Ginestra and Maschito, considered true Cru of the estate. The winemaking processes are carried out very simply, always aiming to keep the varietal characteristics of the grapes in the foreground. The result is straightforward and direct wines that faithfully tell the story of the Vulture terroir.
