Haras de Pirque
Haras De Pirque is located in Chile and is part of the Antinori Marquis Estates around the world. The wonderful winery adjacent to the stables showcases an emblematic horseshoe structure and was designed with the goal of minimizing the use of pumps and other equipment: the terraced construction creates internal spaces with steep slopes and allows the use of gravity for fundamental operations such as transfers or static decanting of the musts, in order to exclude as much as possible the risks of oxidation and preserve the varietal aromatic heritage.
Pirque is the town where the Estate is located, situated in that stretch of the Maipo Valley where the river brushes against the capital Santiago, at the foot of the imposing Andes mountain range. The vineyards are located all around the winery, at altitudes ranging between 550 and 650 meters above sea level. The position and the conformation of the territory determine significant daily temperature variations, which can reach up to 20 °C and translate into ripening slow and regular and accumulation of aromatic substances on the skins. The dominant climate is Mediterranean with a tendency towards semi-arid, but strongly influenced by the looming mountains and the proximity to the ocean: the Pacific anticyclone manages to wedge itself through the opening of the valley and gives the area a truly peculiar microclimate. Rainfall is not scarce and is consistently concentrated in the winter season, that is, the months from June to August. The soils are of colluvial and volcanic origin: they were formed by the collapse of rocks from the Andean slopes, as well as from the eruptions of the volcanoes in this area and present rather different structures, with widespread clay coverings. A terroir of this type is optimal for the cultivation of the great international varieties of Bordeaux origin, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Carménère, which is today the flagship grape of Chile. The picture is completed with the plots reserved for Syrah and Chardonnay.
The work between the rows is carried out with machinery that moves the soil and does not use synthetic products such as herbicides or pesticides. The harvests are carried out by hand, generally by May, and in the winemaking process, some indigenous yeasts selected from the vineyards are used. Fermentations generally take place in steel with temperature control, while traditional French oak barriques are used for aging. The entire Haras De Pirque Estate is now managed under certified organic regime, a conversion that took years of work, between 2006 and 2016.
