Haswell
The British reality of Haswell & Hastings specializes in the production of Dry Gin according to the consolidated tradition of the city of London. The adventure of owner Julian Haswell in the world of gin began in 2011 at the Vin Expo in Bordeaux, where the London producer set up his first small booth to promote the newly produced Haswell Dry Gin. In 2016, Julian moved to Hastings and then decided to create a new gin with another recipe, naming it after the city of East Sussex.
The production of Haswell & Hastings gins begins with a meticulous selection of ingredients, carefully sourced from around the world. For producer Julian Haswell, the three main ingredients of a London Dry Gin are juniper berries, angelica root, and coriander seeds, the latter selected by Julian in Morocco. To these botanicals are added lemons from Spain, licorice root from Europe and China, savory, grains of Paradise from West Africa, and peels of Moroccan and Haitian oranges. Peculiar is then the fact that the infusion of botanicals is distilled no less than 5 times, in order to obtain a product of exceptional finesse and aromatic intensity. As required by the regulations of London Dry Gin, the addition of flavors to the distillate is excluded.
There are several gins produced by Haswell & Hastings, some classic, such as the Haswell London Dry Gin and the Hastings 1066 Dry Gin, others more original, such as the Hastings Raspberry Gin and the Hastings Strawberry Gin, obtained by the addition of raspberry and strawberry, respectively. In general, these are gins that always show an excellent balance between the fresh and balsamic sensations given by the use of citrus and herbs and the spicy notes due to the use of grains of Paradise and coriander seeds. Owner Julian Haswell states that his gins have been designed to be enjoyed neat, although they also lend themselves exceptionally well to the creation of cocktails such as Gin Tonic, provided it is prepared with the addition of high-quality tonic water.
