Heymann - Lowenstein

Cornelia Heymann and Reinhard Lowenstein can boast some of the most beautiful and evocative vineyards in all of Moselle. Their main focus is the territory: terraced vineyards carved from steep slate rock walls that plunge straight down to the Moselle River. The micro-differences of the various vineyards are very decisive for production here, so much so that from a single cultivated grape variety, Riesling, very different wines are obtained.

The Heymann-Lowenstein winery is now considered one of the most interesting production realities in the world. The reasons for this success are due to a brilliant and strongly identifiable production. In the steep vineyards, the harvests take place in November, when the grapes have reached perfect ripeness, benefiting for over 160 days from the slight warmth reflected by the rocks and the river water, which helps to temper the very cold climate of the area. The work in the winery is inspired by the wine traditions of the 19th century, without resorting to modern technology: gentle pressing in contact with oxygen, macerationon the skins, long static sedimentations, spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts and aging on fine lees in oak barrels. The fermentations are carried out completely to exhaust all the residual sugar present in the must, producing dry wines. This practice, long interpreted as an innovation, is based on the long tradition of the Heymann and Lowenstein families who have carried out complete fermentations for centuries.

Heymann-Lowenstein wines are among the best representatives of a modern style of Moselle Riesling, mostly vinified dry. Intense fruit aromas succeed each other in an aromatic profile where slate is the true protagonist, expressing itself with deep mineral veins. These are bottles that can be left to age in the cellar for years, capable of developing great aromatic complexity over the years and decades.
