Hugel
The Hugel Family has its roots in Alsatian history dating back to the 15th century. About two hundred years later, in the midst of the Thirty Years' War, the Swiss Hans Ulrich Hugel settled in the village of Riquewihr to accept the prestigious position entrusted to him by the Corporation of Winegrowers for the enhancement of the region. Thirteen generations later, Hugel has become a name of excellence in production in Alsace, driven by a deep winemaking vocation and an indissoluble bond with the territory, accompanied by a spirit of courageous pioneering. The mission of the winery has been carried on from father to son, contributing to the consecration of the winemaking tradition in European History.
The Hugel winery is a gem in the village of Riquewihr, already known in the Middle Ages for „the noblest wines in the whole country“. The family vineyards extend over the Grand Cru slopes surrounding the small village, covering about 30 hectares of cultivated land. The territory is characterized by one of the driest climates in all of France, given its distance from the sea and the natural protection offered by the Vosges mountains. Due to the morphology of the region, the soils of the Riquewihr hills are a mosaic of soil types, which, thanks to the experience of the family winemakers, can express all their qualities in the cultivated grapes. According to the family’s golden rule "the wine is already in the grapes of Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir that find their home in the Hugel estates.
The Hugel production is characterized by cultivation without fertilizers, a minimal yield for the vines, and a manual harvest to select only the best bunches. After vinification, the aging takes place in the cellars of the historic Hugel building dating back to the 15th century, which houses oak barrels so ancient that they hold international records. Thus are born labels of unchanged quality, a worthy representation of the authentic nature of the region and a dedication passed down through the centuries. The sip of the fruits of the Hugel Family is a revelation, the discovery of an ancient character that is at the same time extremely contemporary.
