Il Conventino
The Il Conventino estate is an interesting reality in the landscape of Montepulciano, an ancient Tuscan village always linked to viticulture and the production of great reds based on Sangiovese, in this area known as Prugnolo Gentile. The origins of the project date back to the 1970s, when Alfio Carpini created a first farm in these lands. In 2003, the property passed into the hands of the Brini family, who continue its management in the spirit of the best traditions of the territory. Out of respect for an area characterized by wild and unspoiled nature, for over 30 years the estate has been managed under certified organic farming using only sulfur and copper between the rows, in order to create a sustainable ecosystem and a healthy relationship between human activity and the land.
The organic approach to the vineyard involves a constant presence in the countryside and a monitoring work of the health status of the plants. Since the regulations are based on a philosophy and on substances suitable for preventing the onset of diseases protecting the plants and not to cure them with chemical principles, many hours of work between the vines are necessary to ensure a healthy development of the clusters. The aim of this demanding process is to harvest grapes that are not only healthy but also genuine, capable of expressing the authentic character of the vines and the terroir. The hilly area of Montepulciano is characterized by the presence of medium-textured soils, very suitable for the needs of the red grape varieties historically grown in these lands, particularly Prugnolo Gentile, Colorino, and Canaiolo. Among the white grape varieties, as is customary, Malvasia and Trebbiano Toscano are preferred.
The hilly area of Montepulciano enjoys a particularly favorable climate for viticulture. The gentle hills of the territory offer beautiful sunny exposures, and the mild and breezy climate allows for the maturation of grapes of excellent quality. The harvest of Prugnolo Gentile, the most representative grape variety of the estate, generally takes place at the beginning of October, and climate change is also leading to increasingly earlier. In the winery, traditional vinifications are practiced, without the use of additives and with spontaneous macerations started only with the use of indigenous yeasts. Aging takes place in large Slavonian oak barrels, in order to respect the aromatic profile of the wine without burdening it with intrusive woody notes.
