Illica

Illica is a small winery in Emilia that produces typical wines from the Piacentino area. A connection to the land, a modern and innovative approach, and a biological production style are the main characteristics of this agricultural enterprise founded by Renato Illica in the 1980s and now managed by his sons Fabrizio and Paolo.

The area is Vernasca, a small region with an ancient winemaking tradition in the Val d'Arda. Wine was already being produced here during Roman times, as evidenced by artifacts from the 1st century AD found in the archaeological excavations of the nearby city of Veleia. In this context, it seems that Gutturnio was born, named after the silver cup from which Romans used to drink at the end of dinner, called Gutturnium. According to legend, this type was created by Lucio Calpurnio Pisone, Julius Caesar's father-in-law, by mixing Barbera and Croatina, thus reviving an Etruscan custom. With centuries of history, the Illica winery combines its connection to these traditions with a modern and technological production approach capable of meeting the needs of the market.demanding consumers, in search of elegance and expressive clarity.

The symbol of the shell, which appears as a brand on the labels of Illica wines, represents the great variety of marine fossils that populate the soils of this territory. About 5 million years ago, the sea lapped the Apennines, and the ancient remains of mollusks, corals, and cetaceans have remained embedded in the clays and sands. These residues, along with the strong limestone component of the soils, influence viticulture and give an elegant minerality to the wine.
